_______________
SHORT STORY WRITING
Q: Is there a more specific description of the themes (science fiction/dystopian or utopian fiction/both) offered in the competition branch? A: Science fiction typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. Dystopian fiction is a form of speculative fiction that talks about ‘dystopia’, or a declining society, while the characters typically fight structural injustice amidst technological ruins—and on the other hand, utopian fiction is a form of speculative fiction that talks about ‘utopia’ which is a form of society that can be perceived as having perfect qualities for its habitants. A combination of both themes—in this case, science fiction and dystopian fiction, let’s say—could put the main character in the position of a researcher sent to explore a widely untouched area in outer space in order to find a certain resource to safe the decaying earth.
Q: What counts as plagiarism? Why do I have to sign the declaration of originality? A: When you take a huge part of someone’s written work and claim it as your own. We will be running originality checks to make sure that any form of plagiarized work will make it to the grading process; those who are caught plagiarizing someone else’s work will be disqualified from the competition. Signing the declaration of originality is necessary to testify that the work submitted is of your own creation and not someone else’s.
Q: Is there any story sample provided by the committee that I can check before working on my story? A: Yes. Your work should look like the sample provided in https://bit.ly/Sample_SSWEAST2021.
